Baby Naming Ceremonies

Question

I would like to find out the Fatwa with regards to having a ceremony for naming the baby known as Dupmaal.

It is done on the 7th day after the baby is born where the family dresses the baby up in a white gown and places the child on a pillow burns incence around the room in some cases thereafter a learned person gives the dua and names the child.

What is the ruling of doing such in Islam?

Answer

The Hadith states that on the 7th day after birth, the child should be named, the hair of the child removed, charity discharged equivalent to the weight of the removed hair, and the Aqeeqah should be carried out. It is not necessary to hold any particular function to carry out the above acts, neither is it necessary to follow any particular procedure as described in your query.

If the ceremony (in question) is considered necessary and obligatory amongst a group of people then this would fall in the category of Bid’at (innovation) and has absolutely no basis in Shariah. We therefore advise abstention from acting upon such customs.
