Disposing Of Interest Money

Question

Please advise with regards to the following:

What avenues are permissible for one to dispose of the interest accrued from an interest-bearing bank account?

Answer

The permissible avenues to dispose interest money is as follows:

1)    Firstly, if a person knows the source of that interest money i.e. the original owner of that money, he must return that money to him. Generally, to find the original owner of the interest money which was accrued from a bank is difficult, therefore:

2)    It is best that he can give the money to the poor Muslims without hoping for any reward. He must realize that, by doing this, he is only trying to escape from the wrath of Allah E and His punishment and is not worthy of any kind of reward, since Allah E is pure and only accepts that which is pure. After this, if he still hopes for reward, this would be extremely detrimental to his Iman.

3)    He may give it to the poor non-Muslims without hoping for reward.
