Income From The Sale Of Cigarettes

Question

My aunts husband owns a cigarette factory along with other businesses.. Initially he had other businesses (supermarket& appliances) then he started the cigarette factory, those businesses don’t belong to him any longer however he now has other businesses (filling stations, investment in property and other business ). So there’s always been mixed income but I don’t know the exact ratio however I assume without certainty that majority of the income is from the cigarette factory. I also have no knowledge of which money was used to start the new businesses and investments following the cigarette factory.

1. Please shed light on the status of their income, can I  eat at my aunts house and accept gifts from her?

2. Similarly my brother and sisters husband work in a division of the cigarette factory (dispatch trucks and handle cash) to my knowledge their entire income  stems from here. So again can I eat at their houses and accept gifts from them?

Answer

Buying and selling cigarettes are Makruh. Therefore, if you are in a position of advising them to abstain from such dealings, in a kind way, and with wisdom, then do so. Do not force them, but merely advise them.

The money earned from dealing with cigarettes is permissible, but contaminated due to the business being Makruh.

Therefore, it will be permissible for you to accept gifts from them, as well as to eat at their house.
