Question
Is it permissible to consume Macon?
Would it be imitation of the Kuffaar?
Answer
Macon is a food item prepared from mutton. If the ingredients contained in the product are Halaal in terms of Shariah, the product will be considered as Halaal.
However, the methodology of manufacturing the product and naming the product ‘Macon’ is in close resemblance to ‘Bacon’ which is manufactured from pork and cherished by the Kuffar. Choosing a name adopted by the Kuffar (for their products) and in fact following the same manufacturing process (as in the case of bacon) is certainly abhorred, as it is in resemblance to the Kuffar.
The Quraan Sharif commands us;
وَلَا تَرْكَنُوا إِلَى الَّذِينَ ظَلَمُوا فَتَمَسَّكُمُ النَّارُ
And do not incline (do not associate with and imitate) those who do wrong (the Kuffar) for then the fire will reach you.
In a Hadith recorded in Abu Daud Sharif, Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi Wa Sallam is reported to have said,
>من تشبه بقوم فهو منهم
Whosoever imitates a nation will be from amongst them.
The fact that Muslims are choosing the same names as the Kuffar for their products is an indication that we are suffering from an inferiority complex whereas we possess the most complete and perfect way of life. Unfortunately, instead of inviting them to our Deen and towards our way of life, on the contrary we are being invited and consequently adopting their ways.
We therefore advise abstention from such a product. After all, there are various Halaal processed meat products available on the market which are suitable for consumption, and should be given preference to.
