Menstruating Women Touching The Icons On A Qur’aan App

Question

Is it permissible to use Quran apps without touching the actual Arabic text but rather using icons on the bottom of the screen to turn the pages and make it start playing etc. while in the state of haidh to either listen to Quran or test someone else’s dor?

Answer

The touching of the Qur’aan requires wudhu,  as such; when the Qur’aan app is open on a device it will be necessary to have wudhu when touching it. Icons on the same page as the Qur’aan will also require Wudhu as they are part of the page of the Qur’aan.  The person without Wudhu may however, use a separate item (not connected to the body) such as a touchscreen pen to turn the pages.

If a woman is in the state of haidh (menstruation), it is permissible for her to listen to the Qur’aan. However, if she has to touch the screen icons that appear on the opened Qur’aan page in order to turn the pages and listen to the Qur’aan, she will not be allowed to touch the page or the icons on the page directly. However, she may turn the pages by using a separate item (not connected to the body);  for instance, a touchscreen pen or perhaps just a pencil that has some foil attached to the rubber end of a pencil.
