Selling Items Displaying Pictures Of Animate Objects

Please advise if it is permissible to tell items in ones store which has pictures of humans/animals on them.

Example: School bag with a picture ______ of on it.

Nabi Sallallahu Alayhi Wa Sallam has warned the Ummah against making pictures and keeping them and the  mmaah is unanimous that making pictures of an animate object regardless of what instrument is used (i.e. pen, phone or any other device e.g. camera) and what the picture is drawn or printed on, (i.e. wall, paper, clothing or any other material) is not permissible and is a major sin.

Rasulullaah has said in a Hadeeth:

“The people who will be afflicted with the worst forms of punishment on the day of Qiyaamah are makers of pictures.”

Once it is known that drawing, taking and keeping pictures of living things is not permissible, we shouldknow that buying and selling Haraam items such as pictures of animate objects is also not permissible.

Unfortunately, we live in an era wherein the market has especially made females a commodity to promote things and each and every item on the market has a picture on it. Therefore the Fuqaha have stated a general ruling with regards to selling and buying such items that have pictures of living things on it. The ruling is as follows;

If the picture in itself is the object and purpose of the transaction, the selling and buying of such an item is not permissible. If the picture is not the object, but it is merely printed on the box or packaging of an item, it will be permissible to sell and buy such items.

Therefore, to sell a bag with a picture of _____ or any other celebrity on it will not be permissible. Such bags are merely bought because of the picture printed on it, in fact that is the main selling point. Young girls who are accustomed to playing with Barbie dolls will want to purchase that particular bag mainly because of the picture of Barbie on it. Our advice is that our brother should abstain from such forbidden transactions; he should prefer bearing material loss rather than displeasing Allah Ta’aala. After all, true success of both worlds is in following the commandments of Allah Ta’aala and Rasulullaah Sallallahu Alayhi Wa Sallam.
