Question
What is the status of reading four Rakaats after Zawwaal? This is not referring to the Sunnat of Zuhr.
Answer
Similar narrations are also found in Shamaail at-Tirmithi, Abu Daawud and Ibn Maajah. There is a difference of opinion regarding the meaning of these narrations. Some of the Ahnaaf say that they refer to the four Raka’aat of Sunnah before Zuhr, while the other Ahnaaf along with the Shawaafi’ say that these four are besides the four Raka’aat before Zuhr. They call them Sunat az Zawaal.
It is more appropriate that these four Raka’aat refer to other than the four Raka’aat of Sunnah before Zuhr as stated by Mawlaanaa Rashid Ahmad Gangohi in al-Kawkab ad-Durri as well as others. Therefore, based on the regular practice of Rasul Allaah Sallallaah ‘Alayh Wa Sallam, it will be Sunnah to read these four Raka’aat of Sunnah az-Zawwaal. And if someone were to read these four Raka’aat immediately after Zawaal, they will also be counted as the four Raka’aat of Sunnah before Zuhr.
