Question
A baaligh boy has millions with his parents. Dur to being 16 years of age, the parents have full control of his funds – he has absolutely no access to his funds.
Is Zakaat and Qurbaani Waajib on him?
Answer
With regards to your query, in principle, Zakaat and Qurbaani will be obligatory upon the son too even though the money is not in his physical possession and his parents have kept it in the bank.
We strongly advise the son to ask his father to discharge his Zakaat and Qurbaani from his personal money and by doing so (with the son’s consent and instruction), his Zakaat and Qurbaani will be discharged. If the son’s father does not agree to this and denies discharging his Zakaat and Qurbaani, then the father will be held responsible for this and he will be sinful according to the dictates of Sharee’ah. We also advise the son to keep a record and note down the amount which will be due upon him every year and when he gets his own money or gets access to his bank account or stand on his own feet, and then he can pay off all the pending dues of the past years.
