Calculation Of The Iddat Of A Woman Whose Husband Passed Away

Question

How will the Iddat of a woman whose husband passed away be calculated?

Answer

The calculation of 4 months and 10 days for Iddat-e-Wafaat (Iddat due to the husband passing away) will depend on the date which the husband passed away according to the Islamic calendar. Passing away on the first of any Islamic month will demand that the Iddat be counted according to months. i.e each month of Iddat will be completed by the completion of that particular Islamic month, even if it turns out to be 29 days. Thereafter on the 10th of the fifth Islamic month (after the lapse of a full 4 lunar months plus 10 days), the Iddat will terminate.

However, if the husband passes away in the middle of the Islamic month, the Iddat period will simply be 130 days irrespective of the Islamic months having 29 or 30 days.

What is actually meant is that you will not calculate the day on which he passed away as one whole day of Iddat, rather you will count from the time that he passed away to the same time the next day as one day and so forth.
