Employment At A Bank

Question

I currently working for an Accounting firm who are an auditing and accounting firm. We do work for a range of different clients in all sectors of the economy. I have recently been offered a position by a Major Bank to join them as a Computer Auditor where I am responsible for identifying weaknesses in their computer systems and reporting this to management. It is a very good offer and it will help improve my work experience. If I were to take the offer, I am not considering staying there for long, just to gain experience and move on.

The place where I am currently working, there is not enough work, therefore this leads to me being unassigned which effects my work productivity levels. This directly impacts my chances of advancing in the company and will be turned down for promotion. Increases are very minimal as well, last years was 3.6%. The banking industry is currently one of the major employers in my job expertise market. So the current thoughts in my mind are that:

1. I will only take the job at _____ for a maximum of 2 years to get experience and then look for another employment; and

2. I will also be able to afford to buy a house with the extra income.

What should I do? Is it acceptable to perform this type of work in a bank?

Answer

The majority of transactions in a bank are based on interest resulting in one’s salary becoming tainted with such interest funds. Hence, even if the job description involves only auditing, the salary will still be paid from the funds that the bank generates from its day to day transactions, many of which involve interest. Furthermore, taking on the job would entail staying in such surroundings where usurious anti-Islamic transactions take place, thus resulting in one’s spirituality becoming adversely affected. At the least, one would be indirectly assisting in the promotion of Haraam activities. The impermissibility of interest is explicitly explained in the Qur’aan and Hadeeth and the warnings are extremely severe. Allah Ta’aala says:َ

“Allah has permitted trade and prohibited Riba (interest).”

In another verse, Allah Ta’aala says:

“Oh you who believe! Do not consume interest multiplying it many times over! And fear Allah so that you may be successful.”

Look at the stern warning Allah Ta’aala sounds out:

“Oh you who believe! Fear Allah and give up whatever interest remains if you are true believers! If you do not (avoid interest), then prepare for war with Allah and His Rasool!”

Hadhrat Jaabir Radiallah Anhu narrates:

Rasulullaah Sallallahu Alayhi Wa Sallam has cursed the one that receives interest, pays interest, the one that writes the transaction, and those who witness the transaction. Rasulullaah Sallallahu Alayhi Wa Sallamhas said that they are all equal.

Furthermore, when working in a traditional banking institution, one is assisting in the promotion of interest-based transactions, whereas Allah Ta’aala says in the Qur’aan:

“Assist one another in good actions and Taqwa, and do not assist in sin and vice.”

Based on the above, it will not be permissible to work for a bank. One has to understand that Allah Ta’aala has taken the responsibility of our Rizq (sustenance), and we are bound to get only what is destined for us. One cannot receive more than what is destined, nor can one receive less. Therefore, turn to Allah Ta’aala by taking out Saqadah, then read two Rakaats of Salaah and supplicate to Allah Ta’aala for guidance, for verily Allah Ta’aala knows all our needs, and Allah Ta’aala is waiting for us to turn to Him. Remember that Allah Ta’aala is in control of every single situation.By obeying the commands of Allah Ta’aala, Allah Ta’aala becomes pleased, and when Allah Ta’aala is pleased then Allah Ta’aala will open such doors which one cannot imagine. One will experience such Barakah and blessings is one’s life which will be hard to actually believe. In conclusion, we discourage you from taking up this job, and encourage you to look for such a job which will leave you without doubts.
