Question
After the eid prayers people do Musafahah by telling Eid Mubarak and hug each other three time shoulder to shoulder.
Please clarify whether this system is correct and please inform me that what is the sunnat system of greeting after Eid prayers.
Answer
The customary hugging and shaking of hands that takes place after Eid Salah is a Bid’ah and Makrooh. It is a custom of the Shias. Hence, it should be fully abstained from.
Fundamentally, it is permissible to say Eid Mubarak (without regarding these specific words as a Sunnah).
It would however, be preferable to instead say تقبل الله منا ومنك which means that “May Allah Ta’aala accept our and your Ibaadaat.” It is narrated that the Sahabah Radiallahu Anhum would greet each other with these latter words on the day of Eid. Hafiz Ibn Hajar Rahimahullah has dedicated a whole booklet by the name of جزء في التهنئة في الاعياد with regard to the saying of تقبل الله منا ومنك on the day of Eid.
